Abstract

Waste paper is regenerated by pulping it in an aqueous bath that has been softened by adding an alkali-metal silicate and also contains an oxygen-yielding substance and a detergent that is a primary or secondary alkylsulphonate having a hydrophobic hydrocarbon radical of 10 to 20 carbon atoms or an alkyarylsulphonate having 6 to 15 carbon atoms in the side chain, or a mixture of these. The hardness of the water is then adjusted to at least 10 DEG German hardness and the pigment particles removed by flotation. A water-soluble salt of an organic carboxylic acid having 10 to 22 carbon atoms or an alpha-sulphonic acid derivative thereof may also be present as a hardness-sensitive surface-active agent. The oxygen-yeilding substance may be sodium peroxide. The hardness may be adjusted by adding a salt of calcium or magnesium. The paper may also be bleached and comminuted at the same time.
