Abstract

1,062,129. Rotary duplicating machines. W. RITZERFELD and G. RITZERFELD June 24, 1964 [Aug. 23, 1963; March 2, 1964], No. 26095/64. Headings B6B and B6C. A rotary duplicating machine having cam means mounted on a shaft 14 and settable to operate a pivotally - mounted impression roller 13 so that a copy sheet may receive an impression of the whole of the matter on a master sheet 1 mounted on a printing cylinder 1, or of the heading and selected lines of the master sheet, is provided with (a) a number of pile tables 50 . . . 54 for copy sheets, each pile containing sheets differing, e.g. in colour or preprinted text from those on the other tables, and (b) electric circuit control means whereby at each revolution of the cylinder 1 the whole or part of the master sheet is printed on one of the copy sheets fed from a selected pile. The cams comprise (a) a cam 15 fixed to the shaft 14 and operating on a follower 28 to effect heading printing (b) three cams 17, 16a, 16b fixed to one another and movable axially of the shaft 14 so that cam 17 can operate on a follower 27 so as to effect whole page printing, or cams 16a, 16b can operate on the follower 28 to effect printing of the first line after the heading and printing the first and second lines respectively and (c) three cams 19a, 19b, 19c which are movable axially to operate on a follower 29 and effect printing of one, two or three lines subsequent to the first line according to their axial position and which can be stepped backwardly relatively to the shaft to effect printing of successive one, two or three lines. Axial movement of the cams 17 . . . 16b from a position in which none of them is operative to one of the three operative positions is effected by energization of one of three electromagnets 45, 46, 47 which move a rod 148 different distances according to the magnet energized and so cause the required setting of the cams. A similar arrangement of electromagnets 134, 135, 136 and rod 137 effects axial setting of the cams 19a . . . 19c. To effect backward stepping of the cams 19a . . . 19c, three electromagnets 43a . . . 43c are provided, each when energized moving a roller 42a . . . 42c into the path of a pawl 37. Energization of one or more of the magnets 43a . . . 43c causes one or more actuations of the pawl to effect in known manner a rearward movement of the cams 19a . . . 19c of one to three lines. A separator roller 55 . . . 59 is provided for each sheet pile and each roller can be coupled to a continuously-operating chain-drive by an electromagnetically-operated clutch. When one of the clutches is operative, a sheet from the corresponding pile is fed via belts 70 . . . 74 to a position adjacent to the transport rollers 48, 49 which together with the cylinder 3 etc., are temporarily stationary. The presence of the sheet is sensed by a photoelectric device 82 which causes a cycle of the machine to take place. During each revolution of the cylinder 3 a lobe on its shaft operates a counter (91, Fig. 6) which causes voltage to be applied successively to a number of terminals on a control member (44). Each terminal is connected in circuit with the electromagnets described above, so that when voltage is applied to that terminal the machine is set to feed a sheet from a selected pile and to print thereon the desired matter. In a modified arrangement (Figs. 9, 12), all the pile tables are carried by a frame (181) movable vertically to bring the piles successively adjacent to a table (180) over which a sheet separated by energization of the electromagnet clutch of the roller 55 . . . 59 of its pile, passes to the transport rollers 48, 49. The arrangement is such that a predetermined number of sheets can be fed from each pile as the frame (181) is moved upwardly, and at the end of the upward movement, a retaining pawl (205) is withdrawn from a gear (202) engaging a rack on the frame (181), and the frame (181) drops by gravity to its initial position.
