Abstract

1,062,056. Web coating apparatus. BURROUGHS CORPORATION. June 8, 1964, No. 23677/64. Heading D1L. An applicator 10 for applying a stripe of a liquid material, supplied from a liquid source 26, onto a web 14 moving in a predetermined direction relatively to a web-engaging surface of the applicator 10, comprises a striping orifice 40 connected to receive the liquid material and which is wider at the trailing edge than at the leading edge thereof with respect to the direction of relative movement of the web 14 and the applicator 10, the oriffice 40 being defined by connecting cut-outs one of which is substantially narrower than the other to define the leading edge of the orifice. The paper web 14 passes from a supply reel 16 between the applicator 10 and a support 18 around idler reels 20, 22, 24 to a take-up reel (not shown). The liquid material may be a magnetic ink, e.g. a dispersion of magnetic particles in an aqueous medium, and is supplied, preferably by a pump, from the source 26 through a conduit 28 into a chamber 35, Fig. 2, in a steel body 30. The chamber 35 is connected to a series of striping orifices 40 which may have any of the configurations shown in plan in Figs. 5a-5c. A metering pin 42 is disposed in each orifice 40 at the trailing edge thereof to extend through the body 30 and is formed with a flat wall 62, a straight edge 64 and a rounded surface 66. A set screw 45 secures the pin 42 and permits the doctoring edge 64 thereof to be adjusted in height according to the desired thickness of the stripe. Alternatively, the stripe thickness may be adjusted by maintaining the pin 42 in a preset position and the paper feed at a preset speed and adjusting the speed of the pump to vary the rate of ink flow. A flat projecting surface 70, wider at the trailing edge than at the bevelled leading edge thereof, is provided for each surface 40. Similarly tapered and bevelled projections 72 may also be provided. In a modification, Fig. 6, the adjustable metering pins 142 are mounted in a separate element 137 attached to a titanium body 130 by bolts 138. An insert 139 of hardened material is disposed in a bore in the element 137 and can be replaced, with the pins 142, when these parts are worn. Both sides of the paper web 14 may be striped simultaneously by replacing the support 18, Fig. 1, by a second inking applicator. The web 14 may be travelling either vertically or horizontally whilst being striped.
