Abstract

1,061,695. Cleaning printing-cylinders. OXYDRY INTERNATIONAL Ltd. July 26, 1965 [Jan. 26, 1965], No. 31848/65. Heading B6C. Apparatus for cleaning a printing cylinder such as an offset blanket cylinder 12 comprises a housing 10 mounting a cleaning brush 58 supplied with measured quantities of cleaning fluid, and means on the housing 10, i.e. rollers 51 at its ends, which engage the cylinder bearers 13 to locate the housing in its operative position. The housing which is open only at its side facing the cylinder 12 is pivoted at 30 and moved anticlockwise to bring the brush 58 into operation. A wiping roller (90) having an absorbent covering with a rubber underlayer may also be mounted in the casing and can be brought into contact with the cylinder 12 by clockwise movement of the casing, the casing being then located by upper rollers 50 engaging the bearers 13. The roller (90) is frictionally driven by contact with the cylinder 12, but the brush 58 has a separate drive for rotating it so that at its point of contact with the cylinder, it is moving in the opposite direction to the cylinder. The bristles of the brush are arranged in helical form and the brush is axially reciprocated. Cleaning fluid is supplied to the upper surface of the brush from a trough (81, Fig. 4) with perforations (86), a perforated pipe (80) within the trough being supplied with measured quantities of fluid by a pump. A knurled rod (75) which, together with a trough (70) the bottom of which engages the brush periphery, removes foreign matter from the brush. If the roller 90 is omitted, the brush 58 is run in contact with the cylinder after the supply of fluid has been cut off, thus performing a wiping operation. Movement of the housing 10 is effected by means of a pneumatic piston and cylinder 40, the cylinder 40 being pivoted to the housing at 46 and the piston-rod 43 being pivoted at 34 to a bell-crank 36 carrying a roller 38 engaging a bracket 39 on the housing.
