Abstract

A sealing element comprises a rigid metallic substrate, an elastomeric normally tacky sealing compound disposed thereon and a non-tacky rupturable film enveloping the sealing compound. The non-tacky film may also envelope the substrate on which the sealing compound is disposed. The substrate may be tin plate. A non-tacky film may be obtained on a normally tacky surface of an elastomeric gasket disposed on a rigid metallic substrate comprises forming on the tacky surface a layer of (i) a lacquer, (2) a varnish, or (3) an aqueous dispersion of a film forming polymer of (a) a vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, (b) a styrene-butadiene copolymer, (c) an acrylic resin, (d)-vinyl acetate polymer, or (e) methyl cellulose, and curing the coating on the gasket to form a tack-free film thereon which is rupturable so as to expose the underlying tacky surface of the gasket. The rigid metallic substrate may have a pattern in the form of a gasket on a portion thereof. The film may be from 0.1 to 0.2 mil thick.
