Abstract
Adhesive coating compositions suitable for application to electrical conductors comprise the resinous reaction product of (1) an aromatic diglycidyl ether having an epoxide equivalent from 950 to 3200 with (2) from 0.25 to 1.0 mols of chain growth promoting material per epoxy equivalent comprising an aromatic diamine and (3) a solvent. The component (2) may also contain an alkanolamine. The compositions may also contain aliphatic glycidyl ethers, polyvinyl acetals and phenol-modified coumaroneindene resins. The compositions give thermoplastic coatings which may be cured by dipping in an alcohol-toluol solution of a boron trifluoride catalyst or in a solution of a polyisocyanate or a blocked polyisocyanate having at least 3 (blocked) isocyanate groups per molecule, and heating.ALSO:Electrical conductors, e.g. copper wire, are coated with compositions comprising the thermoplastic reaction product of an aromatic diglycidyl ether and an aromatic diamine with optionally an alkanolamine, and a solvent, and containing as optional ingredients aliphatic glycidyl ethers, polyvinyl acetals and phenol-modified coumarone-indene resins. In the examples copper wire is coated in a conventional enameling tower with 4 dips of an undercoat comprising a solution of a ureaformaldehyde modified epoxy resin and 2 dips of the composition of the invention. The thermoplastic coating produced may be cured by dipping in a solution of a boron trifluoride complex, an organic polyisocyanate or a blocked organic polyisocyanate and heating.
