Abstract
1,059,498. Statistical apparatus. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. April 21, 1964 [April 30, 1963], No. 16566/64. Heading G4M. Articles such as letters are provided with two sets of radiation-emissive marks, e.g. one set for controlling automatic sorting of outgoing mail and the other set for controlling sorting of incoming mail. The two sets of marks may be applied in different areas of the article, or they may overlap, in which case the two sets must have different characteristics, e.g. one being phosphorescent and the other being fluorescent. The two sets may alternatively emit light of different wavelengths or respond to different excitation wavelengths. Fig. 1 shows apparatus for sensing either phosphorescent or fluorescent marks. A mercury vapour lamp 5 is spaced from the sensing station by a distance such that only the phosphorescent marks excited by lamp 5 are still emitting radiation when they reach light guide 7 leading to photomultiplier 3. To sense the fluorescent marks, radiation from a lamp 9 passes through a filter 13 and portion 8 of guide 7 to excite the marks, and a filter 10 is inserted so as to pass only radiation emanating from the fluorescent marks.
