Abstract
1,058,323. Valves. INSTRUMENT RESEARCH LABORATORIES Ltd. Dec. 21, 1965 [Feb. 10, 1965], No. 5742/65. Heading F2V. A pressure relief valve for life rafts and the like comprises a resilient member 11, made of material such as synthetic plastics and stuck or bonded to the raft fabric 36, and an anchor plate 15 engaged in the member 11. The plate 15 may be made of metal or a rigid synthetic plastics and is provided with two concentric rings of openings 16, 17 within the periphery of a central opening 13 in the member 11. A valve housing 20 secured by screws 23 to the member 11 and plate 15, clamps the edge of a flexible diaphragm 24 against the plate 15 and houses a spring 34 which loads a metal pressure plate 27 abutting the diaphragm. A central opening in the diaphragm has a feathered edge 26 bearing against the plate 15 and a central opening in plate 15 houses a resilient closure member 29, which may be made of rubber or synthetic plastics. Member 29 may be secured in the plate by a shoulder on its stem or by a screw or rivet. captive plug 38 may close the housing 20. When a hand pump is connected to the housing to inflate the raft, air from the pump passes through openings 17 in the plate 15 and lifts the edge 31 of member 29. When the raft is fully inflated, any excess pressure lifts the diaphragm 24 and air escapes through openings 16 and past the feathered edge 26. The raft may be deflated by pushing a probe or probes through the openings 17. If inflation is by gas cylinders separate from the valve, the openings 17 and the mushroom valve may be omitted.
