Abstract

1,058,245. Grinding. BRINEY MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 29, 1963 [Oct. 22, 1962], No. 34193/63. Heading B3D. A dresser arm for dressing a grinding wheel comprises a plurality of parallel extending tool carrying heads 14 secured in longitudinally spaced relation along an elongated supporting frame 12, each head having a tool bar 24 mounted and extending from one end thereof, and means 26 for adjusting the position of the tool bar with respect to the head on which it is mounted located at the opposite end of the head. The frame is secured by bolts 42 to a bracket 40 mounted for pivotal movement so that the frame can be swung in the direction of the arrow 16 to bring the tools 20, such as diamonds, carried by the bars 24 into and out of engagement with a grinding wheel to be dressed. The tool heads 14 are disposed between the side plates 36 of the frame and are adjustable longitudinally of the frame by means of bolts 74 passing through slots 76 in the side plates. Each tool head comprises a body (50, Fig. 4) which is secured by the bolts to the side plates and has a bore (80) in which is received an eccentric sleeve (52) and a cylindrical member 106 having at its lower end (110) a recess for receiving a tool bar (24). Bearing structures (56, 58) having cages locating balls (126) are disposed between the body (50) and sleeve and the sleeve and member under a compressive force so that cylindrical member (106) and tool bar (24) are held without locking means in their adjusted position. The cylindrical member is connected by a key-and-slot arrangement (116, 118) to a disc having a projection (86) engaging a slot (82) in the body, and the sleeve (52) has an axially extending slot (100) at. its upper end engaged by a projection (102) depending from an adjusting member (26) rotatably located in a bore (136) in the upper end of the body (50). A screw (156) and spring (160) resiliently secure the adjusting member (26) to the cylindrical member (106). When the adjusting member (26) is turned, for example by a tool engaging a bore (148), the projection (102) causes the eccentric sleeve (52) to turn against the resistance of the compressed bearing assemblies (56, 58) so that the cylindrical member (106), which carries the tool bar (24) move laterally relative to the body, rotation of the cylindrical member being prevented by the key-and-slot arrangement (116, 118) and the projection-and-slot arrangement (82, 86).
