Abstract

1,058,007. Polyolefin sheet. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Dec. 20, 1965 [Feb. 17, 1965], No. 6817/65. Heading B5B. A process for the manufacture of polyolefin sheet comprises forming sheet material by rolling a non-extruded mass of a polyolefin having a weight average M.W. such that the intrinsic viscosity thereof is above 5.0 (determined as defined below), and subjecting said polyolefin to tensile forces acting in directions lying within the plane of the sheet material formed by rolling and which are at right angles to one another, said rolling being effected at a temperature which is at least 10‹ C. below the normal softening temperature of said polyolefin. The I.V. is determined at 120‹ C. using a 0À1% W./W. solution in decalin. Specified polyolefins are polyethylene, ethylene copolymerized with up to 10 weight per cent of a copolymerizable olefin, and polypropylene, these polymers to have an intrinsic viscosity of at least 8À0. The sheet may be rolled unidirectionally and subsequently stretched at right angles to the rolling direction, or the rollers may be inclined to the direction of movement of the sheet, thereby performing the biaxial stretching in one operation. Rolling is best performed at ambient temperatures.
