Abstract

Slidably engaging surfaces are lubricated by applying therebetween a layer of calibrated hard spherical metallic particles of a substantially uniform diametral size which is less than 40 microns. The spheres may be of iron, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, aluminium or bronze, and may be used alone or suspended in a liquid or viscous substance, e.g. grease, vegetable oil, mineral oil, petroleum, chlorinated di- or polyphenyl derivatives, hexachlorobutadiene, diphenyl ether, chlorinated diphenyl ether, chlorinated benzene, or a silicone. When used alone they may first be suspended in a volatile liquid, e.g. alcohol, merely to enable their introduction between the surfaces.
