Abstract
1,057,241. Prepayment meters. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 24, 1963 [July 25, 1962], No. 28564/62. Heading G4V. A time meter comprises a rotary coin-holder turning one sun wheel of a differential quantity mechanism, a timing motor, the driving spindle of which is parallel to the axis of the quantity mechanism the planet wheels of which it drives through gearing, a switch governing the service bought being operated by a rotary member driven through gears from the other sun wheel of the quantity mechanism, the switch connecting up the timing motor when a prepayment is made. The meter is designed for use in the widely differing circumstances of hiring billiard tables, wireless, television, washing machines, buildings, water craft; shower baths, and electric razors. To enable the time range of the meter to be readily preselected to suit any given application the gear trains are readily demountable to vary the ratio between the quantity mechanism and the motor, the coin holder, and a dial indicating hours prepaid. The time meter may exhaust credit only when an external local switch is operated and the meter in these circumstances contains a relay responsive to the local switch to connect up the timing motor. The relay may be a thermal switch. The rotary coin holder may be a single-coin or a two-coin device. The meter switch may be actuated directly by a cam or by a motion amplifying mechanism between the cam and the switch.
