Abstract
A fire-retardant composition comprises (a) a bituminous material, (b) halogenated material, and (c) a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent (b) Is one or more of: perchloropentacyclcyclo - (5.2.1.02 6.03 9.058) decane, referred to as C10 Cl12; decachlorooctahydro-1,3,4-methene-2H - cyclobuta[cd] - pentalene - 2 - one, referred to as C10Cl10O; 1,2,5,6-tetrachloro-3,3,4,4,7,7,88 - octafluoro - 3,4,7,8 - tetrahydrobicyclopentadienylidene, referred to as C10Cl4F8; or C10H2O3SCL12. Desirable proportions of (b) in the compositions are 1-50% by weight. (a) May be natural or artificial bitumen, or bitumen modified with plant or animal oils, or mixtures thereof, and 5-85% of (a) by weight, may be present in the composition. Solvent (c) may have b.p. of 30-200 DEG C. and is preferably non-flammable; several C1 and C2 solvents are exemplified, trichloroethylene being preferred. Proportions of (c) employed may be 5.80% by weight of the composition. 1-10% by weight of an antimony compound may be present in the composition. Other additives which may be present are asbestos, silica, limestone, slate dust, clay, pigments and halogenated waxes, e.g. chlorinated polyethylene. The compositions may be used for impregnation or coating, or as lacquer or cement.ALSO:Felts are impregnated with a fire-retardant composition comprising (a) a bituminous material, (b) one or more of: C10Cl12, C10Cl10, C10Cl4F8, or C10H2O3SCl12, and (c) a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent. The composition may also include an antimony compound.ALSO:A surface is coated by application of a fireretardant bitminous composition containing a halogenated hydrocarbon with b.p. not greater than 200 DEG C, and evaporating the halogenated hydrocarbon from the surface during and after the application. The composition may be sprayed, brushed rolled or applied by dipping. The halogenated hydrocarbon vapour may prevent or inhibit ignition of the coating composition during application. The composition also comprises one or more C10Cl C10Cl10O, C10Cl4F8, or C10H2O3SCl12, may also contain an antimony compound. Surfaces to be coated include building materials, paper electrical insulation, cord and ropes, bituminized wall board and insulating board bituminous pipe, and asphalt mastic roofs.
