Abstract
A tablet for testing the sensitivity of bacteria to an antibiotic is made by preparing a powder of an inert synthetic plastics material insoluble in water and a powder of the antibiotic, mixing the powders to form a homogeneous mixture and pressing the mixture to make a tablet. The homogeneous mixture may include sodium sulphate to increase the soluble matter in the tablets and thereby their porosity. According to an example powder particles, all of a size passing through a 400 mesh sieve, of autoclave - sterilized and dried polyethylene, sterilized and dried sodium sulphate and Penicillin G were mixed with homogeneous in quantities sufficient to obtain batches of tablets each 5 mm. in diameter and weighing 0.017 g. Each tablet contained 0.002 g. of anhydrous sodium sulphate and 10 I.U. of the antibiotic. A letter or coded symbol was impressed on each tablet.ALSO:A tablet for testing the sensitivity of bacteria to an antibiotic is prepared by mixing powder particles, all of a size passing through a 400-mesh sieve, of autoclave-sterilized and dried polyethylene, sterilized and dried sodium sulphate and Penicillin G, and pressing the mixture into tablets 5 mm. in diameter and weighing 0.017 g. Each tablet contains 0.002 g. of anhydrous sodium sulphate and 10 I.U. of the antibiotic. The sodium sulphate increases the soluble matter in the tablets and thereby their porosity.
