A liquid dispensing apparatus comprises a measuring cylinder 10 having therein a freely movable piston 11 which is adapted to disperse pressurized liquid, such as beer, from one or other end of the cylinder under the control of a valve 17, a lock member 22, Fig. 2 (not shown), being located in the inlet pipe 151 and adapted, under the pressure of liquid entering the cylinder, to engage the valve in order to prevent it from being actuated until the cylinder is full. The lock member 22 is provided with an end portion 222 arranged to engage in one or other of recesses 175, Fig. 5 (not shown), formed in the valve member 17 depending upon which end of the cylinder is being filled.
