Abstract

Arylene sulphide polymers are produced by reacting a polyhalo-substituted cyclic compound, containing unsaturation between adjacent ring atoms and having from 1 to 3 aromatic or heterocyclic rings, with an alkali metal sulphide in a polar organic medium at an elevated temperature; a monohalo aromatic compound may be present during the reaction to limit the polymer molecular weight. The polymer may be subsequently heat-treated, preferably in presence of oxygen or other oxidizing agent. In examples, p-dichlorobenzene was reacted with Na2S, with the following optional additions:-(a) monochlorobenzene, (b) o-chloroaniline, (c) dichlorotoluene, (d) 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene; the reaction is also effected in presence of graphite or MoS2 (fillers). Other examples describe the reaction with Na2S of (i) m-dichlorobenzene, (ii) 4,41-dibromodiphenyl, (iii) 2,5-dibromothiophene, (iv) 4,41-bis-p-bromophenyl ether, (v) 2,5-dichlorobenzenesulphonic acid and (vi) 2,4-dichlorotoluene. The polymers may be blended with, e.g., C-black, TiO2, glass fibres, metal powders, MgO, asbestos, clays, wood flour, cotton flock, alpha-cellulose or mica.
