Abstract

A press comprises a movable beam connected to drive means through a plurality of tie-bars, each tie-bar being pivotally connected at one end to the beam and at the other end to the drive means and being arranged to slide in preloaded spring guides. The press has a base 12 with four corner extensions 13 rigidly attached thereto, a pair of driving crossheads 17a and four hydraulic lifting cylinders 15 having rams coupled to shafts 17 rigidly secured to the crossheads. Four tie-bars 18 have their ends connected to the shafts 17 for pivotal movement relative to the crosshead 17a and their upper ends pivotally connected to a beam 22 for ralative movement thereto about a horizontal axis 22a. A pair of hydraulic cylinders 23 mounted in the base act on the crossheads to lower the beam. Material which has been pressed is removed from the press along the table 25 by hydraulic means (not shown). Each tie-bar of a rectangular cross-section is guided between two sets of guide means mounted one above the other, each set comprising a pair of fixed bearing pates 31. Fig. 3 (not shown), parallel to the length of the beam and a pair of spring-loaded movable bearing plates 32 normal to the length of the beam which urge the tie-bars into a vertical position. Plates 30 supporting the bearing plates 31 are pre-loaded by a force of 1À42 tons per spring by a pair of leaf or coil springs 33 so that the plates 32 bear against the edges of the plates 31. The bearing plates may be of phosphor bronze and have lubrication channels formed therein.
