Abstract
A hardenable composition comprises a phenol formaldehyde novolak resin and a preformed salt of at least one oxyacid of boron or phosphorus and hexamethylene tetramine. Friction elements for brake linings may be obtained by curing a mixture of 15-30 weight per cent of the resin composition and 85-70 weight per cent of a filler. The preferred acids are boric and orthophosphoric. 10-50 parts by weight of the salt may be used per 100 of resin when the salt is for hardening the resin, while 50-350 parts per 100 are suitable when the composition is for use in friction elements. The filler for the friction elements preferably contains asbestos fibre amounting to at least 30 weight per cent of the element, and may also contain barytes, magnesia, brass, zinc or rotton stone. Resol resins may be added, and resins from formaldehyde and a cresol, a xylenol, or cashew nut shell oil are also suitable for use in this invention. Other suitable acids are phosphorous, metaphosphoric, metaphosphorous and metaboric acids. In examples a phenol formaldehyde novolak is mixed with 13-500 parts per 100 of hexamethylene tetramine phosphate or borate and then with asbestos fibre and barytes before curing at 150 DEG C. and 1 ton per square inch to form friction elements.
