Abstract
The invention comprises cyclobutanones of the formula <FORM:1055209/C2/1> wherein each R1 is hydrogen, halogen or an organic radical of 1-8 carbon atoms free of labile hydrogen atoms, e.g. alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, alkaryl, alkoxyaryl, thienyl, alkenyl and carbalkoxy or together the two R1 groups form a 4-6 membered carbocyclic ring with the carbon atom to which they are attached, and R2 is hydrogen, phenyl or alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms. They are prepared by reacting a ketene of the formula (R1)2C=C=O with an allene of the formula (R2)2C=C=C(R2)2. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent.ALSO:Polymers are prepared from compounds of the formula <FORM:1055209/C3/1> where each R1 is H, halogen or an organic radical of 1-8 carbon atoms free of labile hydrogen atoms, or the R's together form a 4-6 membered carbocyclic ring with the carbon atom to which they are attached, and R2 is H, phenyl or alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms. Example 4 describes the polymerization of 2 - butyl - 2 - ethyl - 4 - methylenecyclobutanone by heating in the presence of benzoyl peroxide.
