Apparatus for storing and feeding a sliver comprises a container 10, a pair of feed rollers 4 mounted beneath the container for feeding the sliver into the bottom end of the container, the rollers 4 being mounted on a turn plate 90 and the container and turn plate being relatively movable in a horizontal plane so that the point at which the sliver is fed into the container is continuously movable relative to the bottom of the container, means 21 for drawing the sliver from the top of the container, and control means for stopping or starting rollers 4 when the sliver respectively reaches a predetermined height or falls to a predetermined level. The control means may comprise a lever 28 controlling switch 29, or photocells and light sources arranged at the predetermined height and level. In the embodiment shown in Fig, 4 turn plate 90 is eccentrically and rotatably mounted in a second turn plate 7, both turn plates being rotated by spindle 74. In Fig. 1 (not shown) there is only one turn plate, which is of the same diameter as the container and co-axially mounted therewith. The container has internal ribs to prevent the rotation of the superimposed coils in the container. In a modification there is one turn plate eccentrically positioned below the cylinder which is moved without being rotatable about its own axis along a circular path Alternatively the container may be of oval'or elliptical cross-section, or have two semi-circular front and rear walls joined by straight sides walls. The turn plate which is rotated, has a diameter approximately equal to the width of the container, and the container is reciprocated on rails by an endless chain so that there is formed in the container a series of coils of the sliver positioned up and down the length of the container.
