Abstract

1,054,451. Moulding crown cap liners. M. K. AICHELE. March 3, 1964, No. 8980/64. Heading B5A. A machine which provides closure caps, such as crown corks, with sealing liners comprises a continuously rotating table 14 which collects caps in notches 19 from a shoot 21, a metering device M, described in Specification 1,054,452, which deposits a measured charge of heated plastics material in each cap, and a turret S which rotates in synchronism with the table 14 and carries plungers and an anvil, the anvil and each successive plunger cooperating to mould the charge in each successive cap and to remove it from the table. To prevent subsequent premature chilling or setting of the charges the caps pass through heated chambers 28<SP>1</SP> during their movement from the shoot 21 to the metering device M. The moulding material is a thermoplastics such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, or a thermosetting resin, e.g. a suitable epoxy resin, and is fed to the machine in granular form via a hopper 23, Fig. 2 (not shown), to be worked by an extruder screw 26 and made molten by hot air circulating in a chamber 29. The screw 26 feeds the material to the metering device M, Fig. 12 (not shown), where a measuring plunger 48 which co-operates with a check valve 51 extrudes a known quantity through a discharge passage 50. A delivery plunger comprises relatively movable inner and outer slide members 148, 134 respectively, the lower part 166 of the latter collecting the charge from the mouth of passage 50 during its downward movement, the charge thereafter being delivered to a cap when the inner slide 148 moves upwardly relatively to member 134 so that portion 162, which acts as a needle valve, is raised and a compressed air inlet 142 is uncovered. The turret S, Fig. 7 (not shown), comprises plungers 71 which are depressed and raised as the turret rotates by fixed cams 80, 84 and are each cooled by water which flows via tubes 107, 103 through a closed-bottom punch 88, Fig. 9 (not shown). Coaxial with the punch 88 are a spring urged die 96 and a knife-edged fender sleeve 90, the former allowing the formation of an annular flange on the liner C and the latter preventing contact of the plastics material with the side walls of the cap. Each lined cap is discharged from the machine by being held between a plunger 71 and the anvil 74 to remove it from the table 14 and to bring it to a discharge shoot 112, Fig. 7 (not shown). Prior to reaching the shoot the punch 71 is raised and the cap is moved by the anvil alone.
