Abstract

1,053,294. Dry cleaning apparatus. NEIL & SPENCER Ltd. Aug. 8, 1963 [Aug. 16, 1962], No. 31508/62. Heading D1A. A dry cleaning plant comprises a cleaning drum 2, a solvent supply tank 16, an ejector 28 and a chamber 32. During cleaning the solvent is circulated through drum 2 from tank 16 via pipe 22 and pump 18 and returns via pipe 25. After cleaning most of the solvent is removed by draining and centrifuging and the rest is removed by means of the ejector 28 which produces a partial vacuum in the drum 2 which is heated so that the solvent of a low boiling point (e.g. trichlorotrifluoroethane) evaporates and is drawn off through pipe 24 into the chamber 32. Chamber 32 is cooled by coil 40 and so the solvent condenses together with any water which has been removed from the clothes. The levels of the solvent and the water layer above it are kept constant by overflow pipe 44 to tank 16 and overflow pipe 48 to drain. The ejector 28 is operated by water fed to it from the chamber 32 by a pump 38. Air is permitted to escape through a vent pipe 50 and a further cooling coil 52 may be provided to condence any solvent vapour from this air.
