A package 1, Fig. 3 (not shown), consisting of a stack of coins, or the like, is wrapped in a film 2 of heat shrinkable material. The film is wrapped so that it overlaps in a narrow helically shaped zone. When the film is heated, it shrinks and holds the coins &c. together. The portions of the film which protrude over the ends of the body 1 shrink and close the ends of the body. To facilitate opening of the package, a non-shrinkable strip 3a may be provided under the film 2, or the terminal end of the strip may be heated more than the rest of the film to form a tab 3, Fig. 2 (not shown). If a coloured plastics film is used, the overheated portion turns a darker shade. The package may be heated in two separate operations for this purpose. If the objects are wrapped in a trapezoidal film 2b, Fig. 4 (not shown), a tip 3b of the film serves as a tongue. The package is formed by apparatus comprising a supply roll 18, Fig. 5 (not shown), of heat-shrinkable film which is wrapped around the stack by three rollers 10, 11, 12. The coins are fed down a groove 4, Fig. 6 (not shown), and are stacked in a tube 5 on a plate 6. Two felt-covered rollers 10, 11 are pivoted about an axis A and press resiliently against the tube 5. A third feltcovered roller 12 is pivoted about an axis B and also resiliently presses against the tube 5. The rollers 10, 11, 12 are driven by geared wheels 16, 17. When the tube 5 is full of coins, it is retracted to a position 5<SP>1</SP> and the rollers 10, 11, 12 contact and hold the stack of coins. The heatshrinkable film is then fed by air nozzles 20, 21 and a guide 19 between the stack and the rollers. The guide 19 moves along the axis of the stack as the film is fed, to form a helical wrapping. The film is cut by a heated wire 22 and heated by a wire 23. The package is then pushed out by any suitable means.
