Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A D.C. supply is derived from an A.C. source by way of a rectifier 2, a filter 3, a chopper circuit 4, and a smoothing circuit 8, the output voltage being automatically stabilized by correctively varying the trigger rate of the chopper circuit 4 which includes a load thyristor 10 and a commutating thyristor 11 associated with a commutating capacitor 12, a diode 14, an inductor 13 and resistors 15, 16. The smoothing circuit 8 comprises an inductor 17, a capacitor 18 and a free-wheeling diode 19 connected to be non-conducting when the thyristor 10 is conducting. On heavy load, when thyristor 11 is triggered on to turn off thyristor 10, the induced E.M.F. across inductor 17 is of such polarity as to force diode 19 to conduct. This holds the cathode potential of thyristor 10 at earth potential, allowing the thyristor to turn off rapidly and preventing commutation failure due to lack of reverse bias on thyristor 10 for a sufficient period.
