Abstract

In a planar air-gap machine in which a stationary disc-shaped winding 8 lies between rotatable permanent or electro-magnets 6, 7, the output of the machine is adjusted by relative axial or angular movement of the magnets. This movement may be made manually, or automatically, or it may occur as a result of forces within the machine. One magnetic member may drive the other magnetically without mechanical connection (Fig. 3, not shown), adjustment being made by axial movement of one member. Alternatively, the axially movable member may be carried on a splined part of the shaft and controlled by electromagnetic or mechanical means. A screw thread on the driving shaft may be used to adjust the spacing in relation to the driving torque (Fig. 7, not shown). Similar methods are described for adjusting the angular relationship of the magnetic members (Figs. 9, 10, not shown) and this may occur naturally due to the machine torque under spring restraint (Fig. 11, not shown). Torsional oscillations are prevented by mechanical or electrical damping. The stator winding may include magnetic inserts. In excited machines, the field current may also be varied for control purposes.
