Abstract
1,051,576. Isotropic polypropylene films. KALLE A.G. Nov. 12, 1964 [Nov. 14, 1963], No. 46190/64. Heading B5B. Isotropic polypropylene film is made by extrusion of predominantly isotactic polypropylene at 190-325‹ C. from a slit-shaped nozzle, the extruded melt is quenched to a temperature below 90‹ C., the nozzle slit width being such that the film produced has a thickness of more than 0À3 mm., the film is heated to a temperature between the crystallite melting point of the polypropylene and a temperature 60‹ C. below the said melting point, the film is stretched at linear stretch ratios of up to 15 in two directions perpendicular to one another, stretching first being effected longitudinally and then transversely, the width (b) of the transversely stretched film is reduced by 10 to 35% to a width (c) at a temperature between the crystallite melting point of the polypropylene and a temperature not more than 10‹ C. below the transverse stretching temperature, and the film is then cooled to a temperature below 40‹ C. Preferably the polypropylene film used has a melt index of 3-15 g./10 mins. at 230‹ C. as determined by A.S.T.M. method D1238-57T, a reduced viscosity greater than 2, preferably between 3 and 4, as determined at 135‹ C. in 0À1% solution in cis-decahydro-naphthalene stabilized with 0À5% phenyl-naphthylamine, and a density of 0À90-0À91 g./c.c. at 20‹ C., especially 0À906. The width reduction step is preferably effected at 145-170‹ C., the width of the transversely stretched film being reduced by 20-35%. In an example, a longitudinally stretched film is transversely stretched and its width then reduced on a tenter frame having a zone with diverging clip chains followed by a zone with converging clip chains.
