A butterfly closure memher, mounted for pivotal movement in a bore or a spherical or part spherical closure with a throughway therein and which is rotatable into and out of alignment with the bore, seats against a seating ring contained with axial and radial clearance in an annular recess of the bore with the radial clearance thereof closed by a sealing ring; the seating ring is movable in company with movement of the closure axially along the bore, e.g. due to play in the bearings or deflection of the closure under fluid pressure. The seating ring 18, e.g. of rubber or elastomer which may be reinforced by an embedded metal ring, is contained within a recess bounded on one side wall 15 by a retaining ring 14 secured in position by bolting of the flange 11 of body 10 to a pipeline. The ring 18 is forced by fluid pressure in either direction against the walls 15 or 16 and the sealing ring 17 seals around the periphery of the seating ring at points 28 and 29 by compression against the base of the recess. The sealing ring 17 also reduces the area of the outer periphery of the seating ring 18 subjected to radially inwardly directed pressure 34 to reduce radial compression thereupon. The median of the seals at 28 and 29 and between the convex closure rim 24 and the ring 18 lie in the same plane. The valve may be used for carbon black, cement, cereals and other powdered foodstuffs as well as for fluids.
