Abstract

1,050,257. Coated surfaces. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 5, 1965 [Nov. 16, 1964], No. 46585/64. Heading B2E and B2K [Also in Division C3] Substrates such as wood, rubber, metals, glass, fabrics, leather, linoleum paper, polyamides and polyvinylchloride may be coated with a composition prepared by reacting together in a solvent inert to isocyanates, an organic polyisocyanate having at least 3 isocyanate groups in the molecule and an aliphatic primary or secondary monohydroxy compond of M.W. at least 70, in such proportions that there is a substantial excess of isocyanate groups over and above those required to react with the hydroxyl groups present. The polyisocyanate may be a mixture of compounds obtained by polymerisation of a diisocyanate compond or the product of a stoichiometric excess of a diisocyanate with a polyhydric alcohol of functionality greater than 2 e.g. trimethylolpropane, glycero or 1,2,6- hexanetriol. Suitable monohydroxy componds are aliphatic alcohols and polyether alcohols obtained by the interaction of an alkylene oxide with an aliphatic alcohol. The solvent may be cyclohexanone, methylisobutlylketone, ethylacetate butylacetate, methoxyethylacetate and 4-methoxy-4-methylpentan-2-one. It is preferred to use an amount of polyisocyanate corresponding to about 5 times the stoichiometric amount equivalent to the hydroxyl group present. The compositions may be applied to the substrates by spraying, brushing, dipping, flowing or roller and dried in air at room temperature or heated at temperatures up to 150‹C. suitably in a humid atmosphere to cross-link the composition by the interaction of the excess isocyanate groups with water.
