Abstract

1,049,790. Vehicle wheels. GEO. H. HUGHES Ltd. Sept. 3, 1963 [Dec. 15, 1962; Feb. 14, 1963], Nos. 47396/62 and 5939/63. Heading B7C. A wheel assembly comprises an axle 1 having a recess 7 in its periphery towards one end, and a wheel retaining end cap 8 mounted on the axle 1 by means of an annular member 11 and incorporating a plunger 13 which is mounted for radial movement into and out of engagement with the recess 7, the plunger being provided with a manually operable portion exposed externally of the end cap for effecting release of the plunger from the recess 7 against the action of a helical spring 19. The plunger 13 comprises a plate 14 having an oval aperture 15. A lug 16 projects in the plane of the plate from one end of the aperture, and diametrically opposed lugs 17, 18 extend radially outwardly along the major axis of the oval aperture. The axle 1 passes freely through the aperture 15 while the lugs 17, 18 pass through slots 20, 21 in the end cap 8. The plunger 13 is urged by the spring 19 to engage the lug 16 with the recess 7. To remove the cap the lug 17 is depressed to take the lug 16 out of engagement with the recess 7 against the action of the spring.
