Abstract
<PICT:1049385/C1/1> <PICT:1049385/C1/2> A uniform thickness of enamel is applied automatically to a heated workpiece by moving the workpiece in a predetermined manner beneath a distributer for the enamel, having a number of discrete zones or compartments from which enamel is selectively discharged in accordance with a preset programme determined by the configuration and movement of the surface portions of the workpiece. The apparatus comprises a holder 8 for the work, e.g. a wash basin 3, rotatable in a heated chamber 6 beneath an enamel powder distributer 14. The base of the distributer is formed of a series of compartments 16 having a reticular base through which the powder can be forced by the reciprocation of half-round rods 30 carried by pairs of arms 32. Each pair of arms is connected to a lever 46 pivoted in a frame 47 and attached at its upper end to the armature 50 of a solenoid 51. The solenoids are mounted in a frame 43 reciprocable by means of an eccentric 36. The solenoids when energized carry the armatures with them to reciprocate the rods 30. The solenoids can be selectively energized so as to cause the powder to be delivered in a predetermined pattern to ensure that an even coating is applied to the article. Powder is supplied to the compartments 16 by a conveyer 59. To prevent fusing of the enamel powder in the compartments 16 the lower ends are cooled by water circulating in a pipe 65. If the work is a bath, the movement is both longitudinal and oscillatory about a longitudinal axis. A control system for the apparatus is described operated by a set of cams which can be changed to change the programme.
