Abstract
1,048,520. Making electrical contacts; brazing. TALON Inc. Oct. 19, 1965 [Dec. 23, 1964], No. 44230/65. Headings B3A and B3R. An electrical contact assembly is produced by applying a facing member to the end of a cylindrical core to bond the parts together and form a rivet having a head and shank, mounting the rivet in an apertured support, upsetting the end of the shank projecting through the aperture to mechanically bond the rivet to the support, and heating the resulting assembly to braze the rivet to the support. The core is of composite form and comprises a body 15 of Cu, Cu alloy, steel, Ni, or Al with a sheath 16 of Ag-, Sn-, or Sn-Pb-solder. The solder may alternatively be provided as inserts 16a-16c (Fig. 6 in cross-section, not shown). The facing member 17, which is shown after bonding to the core under a compressive force of at least 2000 p.s.i. and with a speed of at least 10 ins./sec., is of Ag, Ag alloy, Pt, Pt alloy, T, Mo, Rh, cadmium oxide, tungsten carbide or molybdenum carbide. When the rivet is bonded to steel or copper support 18 (Fig. 7, stage C, not shown) the sheath extends over the entire area of contact of the rivet with the support.
