Abstract
104,836. Viven, J., and Bessiere, G. Sept. 26, 1916. Addition to 100,700. Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Relates to projectiles intended mainly to be discharged from a muzzle socket on a rifle by the passage of a bullet through a hole in the projectile as described in the parent Specification, and consists in adding to such projectiles (1) means for igniting the timefuse when the projectile is thrown by hand, (2) means for igniting the fuse on impact, (3) a shorter time-fuse ignited on discharge from the hand or from a rifle, and (4) means for plugging the hole through the projectile and also igniting the time-fuse when it is desired to discharge the projectile from a rifle by a blank cartridge, instead of by a bullet. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a spring striker 31, normally held at safe by a pin 34 and by a lever 35 locked by a wire 36, is arranged to strike a percussion cap 30 in front of the time-fuse 13 when the grenade 5 is thrown by hand, the pin 34 and wire 36 being previously removed and the lever 35 released a.t the moment of throwing. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the percussion cap 30 is ignited on impact by a firing pin 31 with a hood 40 normally locked by a spring sleeve 41, which is removed before the grenade is thrown or discharged, the firing-pin being still held away from the percussion cap during flight by a spring 33. In the form shown in Fig. 5, a shorter time.fuse 46 is added, adapted to be ignited by a spring striker 47 when, at the moment of discharge, a lever 35 is released from the hand or from the socket at the muzzle of the rifle. The striker carries the percussion cap 30, and the firing-pin 29 is fixed to a plug 48. The lever 35 and the striker 47 are both locked at safe by a double-armed wire 34, which is removed when the grenade is to be used. When it is desired to discharge the grenade from a rifle by means of a blank cartridge, the plug shown in Fig. 4 is inserted from the bottom into the hole 6 extending axially through the grenade, and is held therein by the grip of a spring 43. The gases of explosion of the propellant cartridge drive the shoulder 45 of the plug up against the base of the grenade and thus discharges the grenade from the rifle, and simultaneously the front end 42 of the plug forces a member 15 against a percussion cap 14, igniting the time-fuse 13.
