Abstract
1,048,239. Brake linkage. SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE. Aug. 13, 1965 [Sept. 21, 1964], No. 38360/64. Heading F2E. In brake transmitting mechanism including a sprocket wheel or pulley 4 which transmits a brake-applying force, supplied, e.g. by a hand lever having a pawl engaging a ratchetwheel 5 integral with the wheel or pulley 4, to a brake-applying means through a chain or cable engaged with the wheel or pulley, rotation of the wheel or pulley 4 in the brakerelease direction is restrained to avoid excessive paying-out of the chain or cable. This is effected by a braking device for the shaft 2 carrying the wheel or pulley 4, the device comprising centrifugally-operating brake blocks 12 guided for bodily radial movement in carrier 8 secured to the shaft 2, whereby upon rapid rotation of the wheel or pulley 4 the blocks engage a stationary drum 7 to retard the rotation of the shaft so that excessive paying- out of the chain or cable is prevented. Alternatively, the device may comprise pads applied externally to the drum by a centrifugal weight acting via a bell-crank lever eccentrically mounted on a rotating disc.
