Abstract
A process for electrostatically coalescing water from liquid hydrocarbons (e.g. jet fuels) comprises providing a high intensity nonhomogeneous electrostatic field in which at least one of the electrodes is coated with a dielectric material to prevent shorting, passing the liquid containing minor amounts of water through the field for a residence time of about 1 sec. to 1 minute and recovering the liquid hydrocarbon free of water. Preferably, the electrodes are formed by two concentric cylinders, the outer one only being coated with polyethylene, polypropylene or any other material that has a dielectric constant about the same as that of the liquid. Alternatively, the electrodes may be of spherical or spiral forms.
