[Also in Division G1] A circuit for extinguishing arcs in a glow discharge vessel comprises an inductor L in series with the vessel in which counter E.M.F. is induced either conductively or magnetically through an additional winding 18 tightly coupled to the choke. The circuit is switched by a transistor 15 or controllable gas discharge tube, fired by a photo-electric cell or a plurality of cells 11 responsive to different spectral bands connected to a coincidence circuit 12, or other environmental devices, the outputs being suppressed below a determined threshold value. In a vessel fed from an A.C. source the additional winding is fed from the same source.
