Abstract

1,045,991. Nylon filaments. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Jan. 20, 1964 [Jan. 22, 1963; Dec. 31, 1963], No. 2472/64. Heading B5B. A yarn comprises at least one drawn nylon filament of substantially round cross-section, the filament (a) containing 0À5% to 0.75% by weight titanium dioxide; (b) having a surface substantially free of longitudinal striations, and (c) having a lustre and opacity substantially identical to those of a nylon filament of round cross-section containing 0À3% by weight of titanium dioxide and produced by the same melt extrusion and drawing .but with steaming and packaging steps carried out therebetween is made by melt-spinning a linear high polyamide having the required amount of titanium dioxide uniformly dispersed therein, the drawing following immediately after the spinning and comprising therewith a single continuous operation. Specified polyamides include those made by polycondensation of monoaminocarboxylic acids or their amide-forming derivatives, or of equimolar amounts of a diamine and a dicarboxylic acid. Polycaprolactam and polyundecanoamide are typical of the first group, while poly- (hexamethylene adipamide), poly(hexamethylene sebacamide), poly(m-xylylene adipamide) and poly(hexamethylene isophthalamide) are typical of the second. Copolymers of these and other polyamides are also included. The polyamide yarns may contain or carry conventional additives, e.g. antioxidants, dyestuffs, antistatic agents, heat stabilizers and ultra-violet screening agents.
