Abstract

Lactams of o -aminocarboxylic acids having more than 6 and up to 13 ring members are polymerized at 120 DEG to 300 DEG C. in the presence of an alkaline-reacting initiator and, as cocatalyst, an N-acylaminocarboxylic acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol, of formula (R1-CO-NH-(CH2)n-COO)m-R11 where R1 is an aromatic or aliphatic radical, R11 is the radical of a polyhydric alcohol, n is 1 to 12 and m is 2 or 3. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, enantholactam, caprylolactam and laurolactam. Specified initiators are sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, lithium hydride, ethyl magnesium bromide, sodium, potassium and sodium methylate. Specified co-catalysts are bis-(N-acetyl-e -aminocaproic acid) ethylene glycol ester and tris- (N - acetyl - e - aminocaproic acid) glycerol ester.
