Abstract

Cold stabilized synthetic polyvinyl ester latices are prepared by polymerizing vinyl esters of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, optionally together with copolymerizable monomers, in aqueous dispersion in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, a protective colloid and an ethylene oxide condensate of formula <FORM:1044915/C3/1> where R is C6-12 alkyl and n is 175 to 225. The latices may be used in paints and adhesives. In examples latices are prepared by polymerizing vinyl acetate in aqueous dispersion in the presence of hydroxyethyl cellulose, potassium persulphate and (1 and 7) n-nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensates and (2 and 3) n-octylphenol/ethylene oxide condensates. The products are plasticized with dibutyl phthalate.
