A motor -vehicle door latch includes a flat plate 31 integral with a casing 38 with two rectilinear walls 41, 39 slightly sloped in relation to the displacement direction of the door and to the normal thereof respectively the first wall 41 being intended to bear on a striking plate with two teeth 57, 58 and the second wall 39 bearing on a lock-bolt 43 with two bearing surfaces 55, 56 characterized in that the casing also has a third wall 80 for supporting a buffer 82 loosely mounted on a rod 83 extending internally of the casing so that the buffer, which forms a clamping and vertical blocking element, co-operates with the first tooth of the striking plate for holding said tooth against the corresponding wall. of the casing. Parallel to the plane of the plate 31 there is a rod 35 carried by two lugs 36, 37 (Fig. 1, not shown) and on which is slipped a shoe 44 (Fig. 1, not shown) held in contact by a spring 45 with an arm 47 of an operating lever 48. The shoe is extended internally of the casing 38 to form a lock bolt 43. The third wall 80 of the casing is L-shaped with two arms 80a, 80b. Upon closing the door, the striking plate 54 penetrates into the opening 62 of the casing and the tooth 58 engages the ramp 55 of the lock-bolt 43 which is forced to move against the action of the spring 45 allowing the tooth 58 to slide over the surface 56, the spring 45 returning the lock-bolt into the hollow 59 of the striking plate. On a further thrust being applied to the door the second tooth 57 is passed over the lock-bolt 43 and the edge 58a of the first tooth is brought into contact with the ramp 86 of the buffer 82 forcing it along the rod 83 until the catch 53 is held between the buffer 82 and the wall 41. The device can be unlatched by a control lever 48 whose arm 47 forces the shoe 44 out of the latching position. The actuating assembly (Fig. 2, not shown) for opening the door from the inside comprises a pivotally mounted curved lever 93 one end of which is connected to a control linkage and the other engages a lug 52 on lever 48 so that on operation of the control linkage the lug 52 is forced downwards in a slot 34, the shoe 44 thus also being forced downwards. The latching device may be locked from the inside by a lever 100 (Fig. 2, not shown) which can be moved into engagement with arm 51 of lever 48 to prevent the movement thereof, the locking being effected by operating the control linkage in the opposite direction to the unlatching movement.
