Abstract

Twine is made by winding an extensible paper cover about a core of extensible synthetic plastic filaments. The core may be of polypropylene, viscose or nylon. The paper may be kraft paper of normal or wet strength and may be crimped across its direction of run to make it extensible in one direction. Before twisting the paper about the core it is passed through a water bath at room temperature or, if paper of low wet strength is used it is soaked in mineral oil. When water is used it should have pH of about 7 and a hardness factor of 3-9 grains. In addition magnesium and/or calcium salts or other minerals commonly found in hard water may be present. When a mineral oil is used it is a mixture of wax emulsion, sulphonated castor oil and water.
