Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1044345/C4-C5/1> in which each of X and X1 is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 5 alkyl, C2- 5 alkenyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl group and in which more than one substituent may be on each benzenoid ring, Y is a hydrogen atom and the dotted line indicates that the 10,11-position is singly or doubly bonded, and a process for their preparation comprising dehydrating a compound of the formula <FORM:1044345/C4-C5/2>ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1044345/C2/1> in which each of X and X1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C1- 5 alkyl, C1- 5 alkoxy, C2- 5 alkenyl, halo-C1- 5 alkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, C1- 4 acyl, C1- 4 haloacyl, amino, C1- 5 alkylamino, di - (C1- 5 alkyl) amino, C1- 4\t acylamino, C1- 4 haloacylamino, C1- 5 alkylsulphonylamino, hydroxy, C1- 5 haloalkoxy, cyano, carboxy, carbamoyl, C1- 5 alkyl-carbamoyl, di-(C1- 5\t alkyl)carbamoyl, C1- 5 alkylmercapto, C1- 5\t haloalkylsulphonyl, sulphamoyl, C1- 5 alkyl-sulphamoyl, or di-(C1- 5 alkyl)sulphamoyl group and in which more than one substituent may be on each benzenoid ring, Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom and the dotted line indicates that the 10,11-position is singly or doubly bonded, and a process for their preparation comprising dehydrating a compound of the formula <FORM:1044345/C2/2>
