Abstract
Vinyl chloride may be bulk polymerized in the presence of a polymerization catalyst comprising an organic peroxydicarbonate, as a quick response catalyst, together with an azonitrile or an organic peroxide, other than a peroxydicarbonate, as progressive response catalyst. The vinyl chloride may be copolymerized with other ethylenically unsaturated compounds. Specified peroxydicarbonates are diisopropyl, diisobutyl, dihexyl, diheptyl, dioctyl, diisooctyl, dilauryl, ethyl hexyl, isopropyl butyl, isopropyl hexyl, and isopropyl heptyl peroxydicarbonates. Specified other catalysts are benzoyl lauroyl and octanoyl peroxides, azodiisobutyronitrile, azodivaleronitrile and 2,21-azo bis(2,4,4 - trimethylvaleronitrile). The heroxydicarbonate may be added in solution in an inert solvent, e.g. diethyl phthalate. Examples describe the polymerization of vinyl chloride in the presence of diethyl phthalate solutions of diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate and (1) lauroyl peroxide and (2 and 3) azodiisobutyronitrile; and the copolymerization of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate in the presence of (4) a diethyl phthalate solution of diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate and azodiisobutyronitrile.
