Abstract
1,043,089. Centrifugal fans. SHELLEY ELECTRIC FURNACES Ltd. and D.P. SHELLEY. June 25, 1965 [June 30, 1964], No. 26914/64. Heading FIC. [Also in Division F4] A fan for circulating hot air or gas in a heat treatment apparatus such as a kiln comprises a bowl-like impeller 13, Fig. 6, having a lining 20 of metallic or non-metallic refractory material. The impeller blades 21, which are supported by the lining, are also of refractory material, such as fused alumina or silicon carbide, and are preferably tapered to reduce centrifugal forces. Each blade 21 may be set loosely in a slot 27, Fig. 5 (not shown), in a support block 28 made of silimanite or other refractory material and forming a segment of the lining 20. The loose fit allows for thermal expansion, the blade being held in place by a radially disposed peg 29. The remainder of the lining 20 is formed by refractory insulation bricks or concrete set between the blocks 28 with, it may be, a backing of insulation, material. A labyrinth seal 12 is formed either on the impeller 13 or on a surrounding casing 11. Blades 23 on the outside of the impeller produce a greater pressure than the blades 21 to give a small flow of air at ambient temperature inwardly through the labyrinth seal 12 to cool the metal parts and prevent corrosion. As shown, the fan may be carried by an annular plate 10 which forms the main support for a pottery kiln. Hot air is drawn downwardly through an inlet tube 22 by the fan and discharged through perforations 30a in a hearth 30. In addition to heating or cooling the load, the hot air also provides an air cushion to support the travelling load which comprises either flat objects which are directly supported or other items 31 set on flat bats 32 for support. A portion of the dust entrained in the air is removed in the fan and held against the lining 20 by centrifugal force. Where dust retention is not required, the lining 20 and inlet tube 22 may be curved in cross-section to give better air flow.
