Abstract

Detergent compositions comprise (a) a quaternary ammonium salt having one C10- 20 alkyl group, and (b) a bleach consisting of a heterocyclic N-chloro imide, an alkali metal salt thereof, or a mixture of the same. Typical of many specified components (a) are cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and arachidyl diethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. Typical bleaches (b) are N-chloro succinimide, N-chloro naphthalimide, potassium dichloroisocyanurate, methylene - bis - (N - chloro - C,C - dimethyl hydantoin), and 1,3-dichloro-5-methyl-5-n-amyl hydantoin. The compositions may also contain an anionic detergent (c), which may be one or more of many known detergents containing sulphate, sulphonate, carboxyl or phosphate groups, including alkali metal soaps, alkyl-benzene sulphonates, salts of sulphated polyethenoxylated phenols and alcohols, alkyl sulphates, isethionates, fatty ethanolamide sul phates, taurides, and hydroxy-alkane sulphonates. Specified cations in such detergents are Na, K, Li and Mg, and component (c) preferably comprises a mixture of a soap with a synthetic anionic detergent. The compositions may also contain an inorganic or organic builder salt, including neutral and acid sodium phosphates and condensed phosphates, sodium silicate and metasilicate, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate, borax, tri-sodium nitrilo-tri-acetate, and the tetra-sodium salt of EDTA. Further optional ingredients mentioned include additional bleaches (e.g. sodium hypochlorite, sodium and potassium perborates, and potassium permonosulphate), sodium xylene and toluene sulphonates, sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and other cellulose derivatives including ethers and sulphates, polyvinyl alcohol, and optical brighteners of the triazole or benzidine sulphone type. The compositions may take the form of beads, grains, flakes, chips, powders, and tablets, and may be packaged in paper or plastic, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol. If desired the bleach can be contained in a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol packet which is then placed with the other ingredients in another container. Alternatively, the bleach can be coated, e.g. with stearyl alcohol, and can then be mixed directly with the other ingredients.
