Abstract
In a process for purifying sugar-beet diffusion juice comprising defecation with lime and intermediate, main and final carbonations, and filteration or sedimentation, a predetermined amount of the calcium carbonate precipitated during final carbonation to about pH 9.0 is mixed with the diffusion juice to render it stable. The stabilized juice is then mixed with 500 to 1000% of its weight of unfiltered juice from subsequent main carbonation, and the mixture is briefly oversaturated with carbon dioxide gas to bring its pH below 10. An amount of lime equivalent to 1.0 to 1.5% CaO, computed on the weight of sugar-beet, is added to the oversaturated mixture, which is then carbonated approximately to pH 10.8, to precipitate colloidal impurities. The resulting mixture is then filtered. An amount of lime equivalent to 0.5 to 1.0% of GaO, computed on the weight of sugar-beet, is mixed with the filtrate, which is then warmed and subjected to intermediate carbonation to a pH between 10.8 and 11.4, so that colour and non-sugars are removed.
