Abstract
A process for the continuous manufacture of polyesters of tere- and/or iso-phthalic acid and ethylene glycol comprises heating a melt of the glycol and the bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) esters of the acids in vacuo whilst producing local abrupt changes of pressure in a dammed-up melt. An apparatus suitable for effecting the process is described (see Division B1).ALSO:An apparatus for the continuous production of polyethylene tere- and/or iso phthalate from ethylene glycol and the bis(2-hydroxyethyl) ester of the acid by a process wherein a melt of the reactants is condensed in vacuo whilst producing local abrupt changes of pressure in a dammed up melt comprises a heatable vacuum tight casing (8) containing damming chambers (10) intercommunicating through weirs (11) and having a common gas chamber, at least one vertically arranged shaft (1) being so disposed in the casing so as to be movable in an axial direction, to which shaft are secured perforated discs (6) at such a level that they lie below the overflow edges of the weirs, said shaft being connected to a drive capable of performing an alternate pulsating motion. The figures (not shown), to which the above numerals refer, illustrate a vertical and a horizontal casing.
