Abstract
A bacterial composition for the regeneration of intestinal microflora comprises a balanced association of bacterial strains which are saprophytic microflora, combatant to pathogenic yeasts and resistant to antibiotics under the conditions within the human intestine; the bacterial association should preferably incorporate strains capable of secreting enzymes and capable of proliferating in the presence of bile products. The composition may comprise (i) a Lactobacillus strain such as L. brevis, L. bifidus or L. acidophilus, (ii) a Bacillus strain such as B. subtilis, B. mesentericus, B. pumilis or B. megatherium, and (iii) Aerobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Escherichia interme dium or Pseudomonas fluorescens migula. A preferred bacterial composition includes 50-60% of Lactobacillus brevis buchneri, 20-30% Bacillus subtilis and 10-25% of Aerobacter aerogenes; equal proportions of the three stains may be employed. The strains may be rendered more resistant to antibiotics and to pathogenic yeasts by seeding to transplanting the strains through a series of culture media containing antibiotics (specified) or pathogenic yeasts (particularly Candida albicans). The strains should desirably be resistant to sulphamides (specified). Stated proportions of the bacterial compositions may be compounded in a pharmaceutical carrier.
