Abstract

103,957. Sonsthagen, A., and Bernhard, E. H. Aug. 25, 1916. Roller and roller-and-breast mills.-A roller device for feeding dry, pasty, or viscid material to high-speed roller crushing-mills comprises a pair of rollers c, c', Fig. 1, between which the material passes without being crushed, the speeds of the rollers being considerably lower than those of the first crushing-rollers a<1>, a<2>, by which the material is removed from the rollers c, c<1> and conveyed to the crushing-point, and the directions of motion of the rollers c, c<1> at the points adjacent to the. rollers a<1>, a<2> being opposite to those of the rollers a', a<2>. The feed-roller c is journaled at each end in a block c<2>, which is adjustable in radial guides c<3> by means of a screw d provided with collars d<2>, d<3> disposed on opposite sides of the cap d<1>. The journal-blocks e<3> of the feedroller c<1> are carried in guides e<2> at the outer ends of arms e supported upon the spindle of the crushing-roller a<2>. The distance between the rollers c, c<1> is adjusted by means of eccentrics f, which are mounted on a shaft f' and engage within lugs e<4> on the arms e. The shaft f is carried by arms f<2> pivoted to the framing and is provided with an operating-handle f<4>. The rollers c, c<1> are geared together by wheels g<2>, g<3>, and the roller c is driven by bevel and worm gearing from the crushing-roller a<1>. When treating sugar or other dry material, the material may be preliminarily crushed between a serrated roller a<3> and a pivoted serrated plate a<5>. The adjusting-screw a' passes through an arm a<7> of the plate a<5> and is held by a spring a<10> against a plate a" on the support a<12> of the hopper a<4>. A pivoted spring-pressed plate a<13> vibrated by a ratchet-wheel a<14> delivers the crushed material to the hopper b of the rollers c, c'. In a modification, Fig. 3, a crushing-roller 1 co-operates with the feed-roller 4, which is adjustable both radially and tangentially and runs at a higher speed than the combined feed and crushing roller 1. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, the crushing-roller 5 co-operates with a feedroller 8, and the thickness of the material fed to the crushing-rollers 5, 6, 7 is regulated by means of a breast or slide 9 on the hopper 10. Two or more pairs of feed-rollers may be arranged to work in conjunction with one or more sets of crushing-rollers.
