Abstract
1,039,248. Casting-processes. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Sept. 9, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 36866/64. Heading B3F. In a method of solidifying metal under gaseous pressure, the desired gaseous pressure is produced within the mould by the rise of pressure of an inert gas forced under a high pressure into the closed mould, owing to the heating thereof by the melt, with or without supplementary electrical heating. A mould for casting hollow ingots comprises an internally tapered copper or like sleeve 7, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), press-fitted to a correspondingly tapered steel, water-cooled core bar 10, the assembly including wedge pieces 9. A two-part copper mould liner 14 is supported by a two-part water-cooled steel jacket 16 externally tapered and clamped by bolts 19. Over the jacket 16 is pressed a correspondingly tapered pre-stressing ring 23. A cover 24 containing inlet and exhaust opening for an inert gas, preferably argon, and electrical heating means 32 fits over the top of the assembly which is mounted on a bottom plate 1 mounted on a trolley 3. After pouring and during solidification the mould is mounted in a clamping frame with wedges which engage the top 24. Ceramic or like plates 58, 59 are fitted to obtain cooling, in the peripheral direction. Foundry plant, Fig. 5 (not shown) indicates the sequence of operations from the assembly of the mould parts to extraction of the casting and recommencement of the cycle.
