Abstract
1,038,711. Point-by-point radiographic examination. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 17, 1963 [May 24, 1962], No. 20050/62. Heading H4F. A specimen 1, Fig. 1, for example a fuel element of an atomic reactor, is rotated by a motor M and examined point-by-point by an X-ray source 2 in conjunction with a radiation detector 11, 12 (a scintillation crystal and photomultiplier) which are traversed axially of the specimen by a threaded shaft 6, signals from the detector being applied through processing circuit 13 to a facsimile type of recorder 14 which is driven in synchronism with the scanning by a coupling 17 from motor M. 8 and 10 are lead collimating elements. The invention may use gamma rays in place of X-rays as illustrated, and may also extend to examination by radiation emitted from a specimen. In the processing circuits, Fig. 2, the signals from the scintillator and photomultiplier 11, 12 are applied via a cathode-follower 20 and pulse amplifier 21 to a sealer 22. The sealer may then be used selectively to operate the recorder either by way of pulse generator 23 and power amplifier 24 (so as to produce a half-tone type of record with variable dot spacing) or by way of a ratemeter 25 and amplifying system 26-31 (so as to produce a continuous tone type of record). In system 26-31, the ratemeter output modulates a signal from oscillator 27, the signal being amplified at 28 and 29 and then rectified at 30. An adjustable bias 31 and an adjustable gain control in amplifier 28 permits the effective range of recorded signal to be adjusted and unwanted (i.e. background radiation) counts to be eliminated. Reference is made to the examination of specimens in the form of plates.
